Mr. Fassou THEA, the newly appointed Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of the Republic of Guinea and current President of ATLAFCO, was born in N’Zérékoré, in the southeastern region of Guinea, on January 1st, 1976.
A specialist in environmental assessment and sustainable development, Mr. THEA received his academic training both in Guinea and abroad. He is fluent in French and English, and has working knowledge of Arabic.
An alumnus of Guinean universities, Mr. THEA earned a degree in English Language from the University of Kankan in 2005. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Environment and Sustainable Development in 2014 from Aube Nouvelle University in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
He entered the civil service in 2006 and was assigned to the N’Zérékoré Teacher Training College (ENI) as an instructor. He subsequently joined the Ministry of Environment, where he held various positions of responsibility, including Environmental Assessment Officer, Section Head, Assistant to the Secretary General, and later Head of the Division for Residual Impact Mitigation.
From November 2020 to November 2021, Mr. THEA served as an advisor and support expert at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Guinea to the United Nations in New York, during Guinea’s presidency of the G-77 and China. While in the United States, he earned a Master Track in Development and Sustainability from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Beginning November 26, 2021, he held several advisory roles within the Office of the Prime Minister: Special Advisor, Advisor on Sustainable and Maritime Development, and Advisor on Environment, Sustainable Development, and Sanitation.
In August 2022, Mr. Fassou THEA became a visiting researcher at the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona in Tucson (USA). His work focused on developing ideas and potential collaborations to mitigate the negative impacts of major infrastructure development projects, particularly the construction of large hydroelectric dams on the Konkouré River in Guinea.
He also holds several U.S. certificates in diplomacy, international negotiations, and sustainable development.
Mr. THEA is a member of the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) community in New York, United States of America.
